Energy Savings

Every month or so, there's a MASSMAIL to staff or a story in the local media about how the recent hikes in energy prices and usage have done nasty things to UIUC's budget. While asking faculty and staff to reduce energy usage is a good thing, it'd do wonders for DIA to set an example and not have the lights turned on at Memorial Stadium every single night for no good reason. It's not even football season anymore, the thing is effectively mothballed until August.

And yes, I'm aware of the construction. That still doesn't supply a reason for keeping the stadium lights on overnight.

The contractors are working 3 shifts a day, 6 days a week and 2 shifts on Sundays. There's a reason the lights are on.

All this work is happening outside for all those shifts? It requires both of the Eastern light stands to be fully lit?

I wonder how much energy those lights actually use. Lighting isn't usually a big energy drain, though for a stadium they're probably big multi-kilowatt bulbs. I've heard that one of the biggest energy expenses on campus is outdated HVAC systems in some of the buildings.

Having been around campus for a while, I'll believe that. The stadium lights are still rather conspicuous, though.
